Walking into a martial arts academy for the first time can feel intimidating. At Arashi-Do Sylvan Lake, we want you to feel prepared and excited for your first karate class. Here’s exactly what to expect.
Before Class:
Wear comfortable athletic clothing—sweatpants or shorts and a t-shirt work perfectly. Remove jewelry and ensure your nails are trimmed. Arrive 10-15 minutes early to meet the instructor and complete any paperwork.
The Dojo:
You’ll notice students removing their shoes before entering the training area. This Japanese tradition keeps the mats clean and shows respect for the training space. Bow when entering and leaving the dojo floor.
Class Structure:
1. Warm-up: Jumping jacks, stretches, and basic movements to prepare your body.
2. Basics (Kihon): You’ll learn fundamental stances, punches, and kicks. Don’t worry about perfection—focus on listening and trying.
3. Forms (Kata): These choreographed patterns teach movement principles and serve as solo practice methods.
4. Partner Drills: Controlled exercises with a partner to practice timing and distance.
5. Cool-down: Stretching and breathing exercises to conclude training.
Our instructors understand everyone starts somewhere. Questions are encouraged, and patience is our policy. Your first class is about showing up—that’s the hardest part.
