The Gi

A heavy cotton uniform. Grip fighting is huge — you grab the collar, sleeves, and lapels. Slower, more technical.

No-Gi

Rash guards and shorts. No fabric to grab, so you rely on underhooks, wrist control, and body locks. Faster pace.

Which should you start with?

Either works for beginners. Many schools offer both. Try both and see which fits your style.
