What to Pack for Your First Martial Arts Class

A simple checklist for arriving comfortable, prepared, and ready to learn at your first martial arts class.

# What to Pack for Your First Martial Arts Class

Your first martial arts class does not require a complicated gear bag. The goal is to arrive comfortable, clean, and ready to pay attention. Your school can tell you what is specific to its program, but this short checklist covers the essentials.

## Wear Comfortable Training Clothes

For a trial class, choose athletic clothing that lets you move easily: a T-shirt or fitted athletic top and shorts, leggings, or sweatpants without zippers or hard pockets. Avoid jewelry, watches, and anything that could catch on a partner or the mats.

If you are joining a gi-based class, the school will explain when and how to get a uniform. There is no need to buy one before asking.

## Bring Water and a Small Towel

Training is active, even for beginners. A water bottle and small towel are usually enough. Hydrate beforehand too; arriving well hydrated feels much better than trying to catch up after class.

## Keep Hygiene in Mind

Trim fingernails and toenails, wear clean clothes, and bring footwear for walking off the mats. Bare feet on the training surface are common, but sandals or slides keep your feet protected in hallways and washrooms. If you have a skin condition, open wound, or feel unwell, check with the coach before training.

## Bring Questions, Not Pressure

You do not need prior experience or perfect fitness. Let the instructor know about injuries or limitations, ask where to put your belongings, and focus on learning the first few movements safely. The only real requirement is a willingness to participate.

At Arashi-Do Sylvan Lake, we will help you understand what your specific class needs before you step on the mats.
