The First 90 Days: What to Expect When You Start BJJ/Karate

New to BJJ or Karate? Here is what to expect during your first 90 days of training and how to navigate the learning curve at Arashi-Do.

Starting a martial art is exciting, but it can also be humbling. The first 90 days are often the most challenging—and the most rewarding—part of the journey. Understanding the roadmap can help you push through the initial friction.

Days 1-30: The Learning Curve. This phase is about survival and basic orientation. You’ll feel clumsy, and things won’t click immediately. This is normal. Your goal here is simply to show up and absorb as much as possible. Focus on the fundamentals: how to move, how to fall, and how to listen.

Days 31-60: The Discovery Phase. This is where the patterns begin to emerge. You’ll start to recognize a move before it happens. You’ll have your first “aha!” moment where a technique actually works in a live roll. This is the phase of rapid growth and increasing curiosity.

Days 61-90: Building Consistency. By now, the dojo feels like home. You’ve developed a basic set of tools and a level of physical conditioning. The focus shifts from “how do I do this?” to “how do I do this better?”

Consistency is the only secret to success. If you can make it through the first 90 days, you’ve already beaten the hardest part of the journey.
